Where Joy Grows in the Heart of St Ann’s

In a small garage in St Ann’s, Nottingham, something extraordinary is happening. What began as one man’s concern for children playing in the road has become a vibrant hub of laughter, belonging, and joy.
When Neil opened his garage to local children and called it Hope Hut, he wanted to offer a safe space after school. Ten years later, it has grown into a thriving community venue filled with food, games, and friendship.
Volunteer Luke Goss describes it best: “It’s amazing here, and there’s so much potential. In summer, this place bursts with life, football, barbecues, running groups and in winter, it’s a warm space where people can find company and connection.”
Every Tuesday, Hope Hut is alive with joy. Children play, parents chat, and laughter fills the air. Volunteers like Sue and Chris cook up meals that bring neighbours together. “Without this, there’d be nothing for the kids after school,” says Sue.
The joy that flows through Hope Hut touches lives in deep ways. Tricia, now 22, first came at 13. “Hope Hut has literally changed my life,” she says. “It gave me confidence, and now I volunteer to help younger kids believe in themselves too.”
For Lee, who joined after a difficult year, that same joy brought hope. “I was in a dark place, but when I walk through the door, they put the kettle on. There’s always someone here for me.”
Even the youngest visitors understand what makes this place special. “Everyone comes to have fun and make friends,” says Iyla, proudly.
Joy at Hope Hut isn’t loud or fleeting. It’s steady and shared, the joy of being seen, of belonging, and of knowing that together, the community is stronger.
