Love in action in the Heart of St Ann’s

In a small garage in St Ann’s, Nottingham, something extraordinary is happening. What began as one man’s concern for children playing in unsafe streets amid high levels of crime and gang activity, has grown into a vibrant hub of love, belonging, and hope.
When Neil, a regular churchgoer, first opened his garage and named it Hope Hut, his aim was simple: to offer local children a safe place to go after school. Ten years on, with the help of dedicated volunteers, Hope Hut has grown into a thriving community space filled with food, games, friendship, and hope.
Here’s what some of the lovely volunteers and attendees had to say about how Hope Hut has changed their lives.
“It’s amazing here, and there’s so much potential. In summer, this place bursts with life, football, barbecues, running groups and in winter, it’s a warm space where people can find company and connection. We aren’t social workers – we are people who live in these streets – but we encourage growth and dreams.”

Every Tuesday, Hope Hut comes alive with joy. Children play, parents chat, and laughter fills the air. Volunteers like Sue and Chris cook meals that bring neighbours together. “‘This keeps kids off the streets and gives them bags of confidence. Without this, there’d be nothing for the kids after school,” says Sue.
Tricia, now 22, first came to Hope Hut when she was 13. “it’s a great way to stop kids from getting into mischief. I struggled at school, so I want to stop them from giving up, and to feel confident. I come and help them with homework – I’ll admit, sometimes I find the maths hard! This place literally changed my life for the better – and now I’m giving back.”
For Deziah, Hope Hut is a place to play football with friends. For his mum, Jemma, it’s something even more meaningful. “I asked Deziah what he thought was missing and without hesitating he said ‘community!’. That’s what Hope Hut does – it’s a place to share community spirit, and show kids how important that is. You can’t put a price on the memories they are getting.”
Love at Hope Hut isn’t loud or fleeting. It’s steady and shared - love in action of being seen, being welcomed, and knowing that together, the community is stronger.
